Allan Turing designed the Turing Test in the 1950s as a way of measuring artificial intelligence but could you pass the test? To pass the test the artificial intelligence had to communicate using natural human language with the judge via some mechanism and to pass the Judge couldn’t determine if the communication was human or artificial intelligence.
While I don’t see the value in using this test as a measure of artificial intelligence I consider the impact of flipping this question around interesting. In today’s world of instant messages and emails; how do we determine who is human and who is actually a spam-bot?
Prove to me you are human.
I think the answer will become more about what we consider important in belonging to human society and less about the intelligence – artificial or natural. Consider the emerging trends of augmented intelligence, human intelligence augmented with artificial data sources, and cybernetic implants. There are already people – today – walking about with direct computer to brain interfaces such as vision to the blind. As humanity integrates with our technology; when do we stop being human; 10% after our hip and knee replacement surgery; 20% heart/lung replacement? No matter what your views are, one thing is certain. We as society will have to redefine what it means to be human.
